VPN that works in Russia in 2026

What gets blocked, what still works, and what to set up before you travel.

Updated October 6, 2026 · Vetryx team

What's blocked

  • Classic VPN protocols — WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPsec, L2TP. They're easy to fingerprint, so they're blocked first. See VPN protocols compared.
  • Many well-known VPN services and browser extensions that rely on those protocols.
  • VPN apps in the Russian App Store — Apple removes them periodically, and look-alike clones appear. See VLESS apps for iPhone.

What still works

  • VLESS + REALITY — traffic looks like HTTPS to a popular website.
  • VLESS + XHTTP and WebSocket — look like regular web traffic.
  • Hysteria2 — fast on mobile networks.
  • And, crucially, a service that replaces blocked servers quickly and pushes them to your apps through a subscription.

Mobile whitelists

In some regions, mobile operators periodically switch to whitelists: only approved — mostly Russian — sites and services work, and regular VPN servers become unreachable on any protocol. Wi-Fi and home internet usually keep working normally. Getting online on whitelisted mobile data requires dedicated servers. More: VPN and mobile whitelists in Russia.

  3. Add your subscription and testConnect once and run a VPN check so you know it works.

FAQ

Do VPNs work in Russia in 2026?

Some do. VPNs on WireGuard, OpenVPN and IPsec are blocked first. Services on VLESS + REALITY, XHTTP and Hysteria2 that replace blocked servers quickly keep working.

What should I set up before traveling to Russia?

Install the VPN app and add your subscription before you arrive: many VPN apps aren't available in the Russian App Store, and foreign payment cards may not work for new purchases.

Why does my VPN work on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data in Russia?

In some regions, mobile operators switch to whitelists that only allow approved — mostly Russian — sites. Regular VPN servers are unreachable then; you need dedicated servers for whitelisted mobile internet.
